It’s heading into winter and who doesn’t need a bit of French sunshine on the Cote d’ Azur with a great ensemble cast, deft direction by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (Carla Bruni’s sister) and clever screenplay.
With wine soaked lunches, night time trysts, loves gone wrong, a dysfunctional family, some domestic help and an unbeatable setting, this film has a rich tapestry of characters that are never less than entertaining.
If it looks like a French-Italian co-production and feels like one that’s because it is, hence the well known Italian actors on board and other notifiers; the comedy, not taking life too seriously, is there anybody else in the world attitude of the characters.
No one here thinks about politics.
The Summer House was nominated for Best Film at the Seville and Haifa International Film Festivals which goes some way in recognising Tedeschi’s obvious directorial, acting and writing talents.
That she comes from the bourgeoise and depicts them in film is not her fault. She can’t help that, or being beautiful and the Festival enjoys this kind of film; looking at impossible lives in enviable locations. It helps one forget one has to fill up the car and go to the supermarket like everybody else.
The proper translation of LES ESTIVANTS is the summer visitors and that seems more appropriate to both the film and how one will feel watching this film. A good French wine beforehand will set the mood perfectly. Enjoy.
